Hometown Hero Set to Return
Columbus, GA (March 18, 2009) – On Wednesday at a special press conference held at the Columbus Civic Center, the Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association arguably completed one of the biggest free agent signings in the clubs and leagues short history with the signing of wide receiver Troy Bergeron (6’2 195, Middle Tennessee State).
“Just feels right for my family and I to come back to Columbus and play in the indoor game that I love so much,” says Troy Bergeron. “I had many other offers including some from clubs in CFL, but I didn’t want to have to relocate my family and once I learned that the AFL will return in 2010 coming to Columbus was the ideal fit.”
Troy, a former Shaw High School standout, returns to a city where he not only won a state championship but also began his indoor career with the defunct AF2 Columbus Wardogs.
“Once I learned that the AFL was suspended for the season, Troy was one of the first calls I put in and we just kept communication through the holidays and training camp,” says Head Coach Jason Gibson. “We are a community based organization with 100% local ownership and why not bring back one of the communities biggest sports star.”
Troy will get his first taste of AIFA football this Sunday as the Columbus Lions take on the Carolina Speed at the Columbus Civic Center at 4pm. Contact the Lions front office at 706-322-3DEN to learn how you can still get your season tickets or single game tickets.
