Late Speed Boost Puts Lions over Carolina
Columbus, GA (March 14, 2009) - Thanks to a late touchdown pass from quarterback Bill Ashburn to wide receiver Gerald Gales, the Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association escaped from Charlotte with a 50-49 win over the Carolina Speed in their opening game of the 2009 season.
Down by nine at the start of the 4th quarter, the Lions defense managed to hold Carolina scoreless for the rest of the game and scored the needed ten points thanks to a Martinez field goal and touchdown grab by Gerald Gales.
The Speed seemed to have the Lions number as the offense scored 41 points by halftime. Lead by wide receiver Josh Smith and his three touchdown receptions, the Speed continued to put pressure on the Lions defense into the third quarter before they settled down and made some key stops.
Carolina had their opportunities to score in the fourth quarter but were shutout thanks to two missed field goals by Chris Brewer including one with three seconds left in the game. Special teams proved to be Carolina's biggest downfall as Brewer was only 3 of 6 in extra point attempts and 0 for 3 in field goals.
Lions quarterback, Bill Ashburn, made his indoor debut in style thanks to five touchdown passes and another on the ground. Both wide receivers Joel Babb and Gerald Gales finished the night with two touchdown catches apiece. Defensively the front five supplied pressure on Speed quarterback Shayne Milligan throughout the game on there way to a 3 sack night. Linebacker Justen Rivers splashed into the 2009 season in a big way with three blocked field goals, safety, and 1 sack leading a Lions defense that only surrendered 8 second half points.
"Anytime you can go on an opposing teams field and pull out a win you have to be happy, even if its by one point," says Head Coach Jason Gibson. "Our defense stepped up and made adjustments at halftime, were going to look at the film and turnaround and see this same team again and I expect that game to be just as close as this one was."
The Columbus Lions home opener is Sunday March 22nd at the Columbus Civic Center, to find out how you can get tickets contact the Lions front office at 706-322-3DEN so you can GET IN THE JUNGLE!
