The Mississippi MudCats' season came to an end Friday night in Casper, Wyo., as the host Wyoming Cavalry claimed a 54-26 victory in the AIFA Western Conference championship game. The MudCats trailed 34-15 at halftime and 42-26 after three quarters. After pulling off several improbable comebacks during the season, the indoor football squad from Northeast Mississippi ran out of fourth-quarter magic. Wyoming (13-3) advances to Friday night's AIFA Bowl II at the Florence (S.C) Phantoms (12-4), who defeated the Reading (Pa.) Express 52-37 last weekend for the league's Eastern Conference title. The MudCats ended the season with a 14-2 record. It's the second consecutive year the team has lost in the league's championship semifinals. Last year, the 'Cats lost 84-62 in the conference championship game to the Lakeland Thunderbolts, who went on to win the AIFA championship. In two seasons, the MudCats have 26 wins against six losses. Despite that success, it's unclear is if the Tupelo-based team might return in 2009 for another shot at the league title due to persistent financial struggles.
