MudCats Coaches Leave as the
All Time Winning Coaching Staff in the AIFA History
(Tupelo, MS) When Indoor Arena Football returned to Tupelo, MS in 2007, it brought with it a Coaching Staff that was led by Head Coach Brian Brents that is second to none.
The Coaching staff, which was comprised of Head Coach Brian Brents, Defensive Coordinator/Associate Head Coach, Gary Patterson and Director of Player Personnel/Co-offensive Coordinator, Kirk Broussard returned to the Mississippi MudCats for the 2008 Football Season; after leading the MudCats to a 12-4 record in the 2007 inaugural season, where they were runner up in the Southern Conference Division. During their stint with the MudCats they produced a 23-5 overall record and a 15-1 home record for the 2007 and 2008 season under the American Indoor Football Association and produced two championship caliber teams.
The Coaching staff has a long history together and has been successful wherever they have coached. Coach Brents helped build the Odessa Roughnecks of the IFL in Odessa, Texas into a playoff caliber team in 2004 and returned in 2005 as the Offensive Coordinator with Coach Patterson as the Co-Defensive Coordinator, where they had a winning team with a 16–1 record and appeared in an IFL Championship game. Then in 2006 Coach Brents went to the Lakeland, Florida with the Lakeland Thunderbolts with Coach Broussard, where they produced a NIFL Conference appearance Team with a 13-3 record. And Coach Patterson was at Odessa in 2006 where they had a 14-2 season and won the IFL Championship. Their combined overall record with the IFL, NIFL and AIFA boasts an impressive 66-11 record with one championship win and 3 championship appearances.
Coach Brents has superior leadership skills which are based on Christian ethics and morals and combined with Coach Broussard’s nationally recognized professional recruiting and talent evaluating skills and Coach Patterson’s top ranked defensive strategy; they are truly an untouchable team.
In 2007 they were all picked to coach the AIFA All-Star game at the end of the season and produced five players in the All-Star Game as well from the MudCat squad. They went into the 2008 season recognized as the AIFA #1 ranked team to win the overall AIFA Championship with the Mississippi MudCats. They have consistently been ranked #1 throughout this season on the AIFA Weekly Power Ranking.
They comprised a team with the MudCats with talented players from all over the nation, as well as a lot of local superstar talent from Mississippi. They also had phenomenal chemistry with all of the players and feel bittersweet about leaving such an outstanding championship team. However, the coaches were asked to renegotiate their pay structure for less pay during a financial reconstruction and they all made the decision that they could not do this to their families. They are now marketing themselves for new positions that will hopefully take them all to the next level of their coaching careers.
