After a trying season on and off of the field, the Legends finished in a classic come from behind win last night. It was a great way to end to season with just less than 1500 energized fans at the Civic Center.
We have had great meetings down the stretch with the Mayors Office, CVB, Chamber, Ad agencies and others who will help market, advertise and prepare us for 2009 season. Our league has a full page ad in the Professional Football Hall of Fame Guide, positioning us in the greatest game in town.
It was a joy to have Michael Doss, McKinley, OSU National champion Captain and NFL great, present Rashan Hall with an award for his last Legends game and his accomplishments at half time. Fans came from everywhere to speak with and get autographs by Michael and Rashan during and after the game.
We have experienced the best and worst of times, winning the championship in 2006 and finishing last place in our conference in 2008. 2009 promises to be a much better year. We are surrounded by football talent in our area. Our strategy was to bring in the best local talent. We know arena football is faster, more physical cause no out of bounds and a slightly different game. We knew our local guys would need to adjust and we would probably go through a learning curve, which many did. With local guys like Brinson, Murphy, Smith, McClain and Rodriquez getting to know the game better, sprinkled with a few outside greats like McMullen and Mason we look to be very competitive again in 2009. We have worked very hard to overcome many obstacles to get to this point and are proud of our accomplishments finishing with 3 wins - 2 losses in our last five games, and losing 6 games within seven points.
As the bikes brought the dance team out on the field to start the game Saturday night, the energy level was extremely high and loud as the players came out of the tunnel. Our dance team lead by Keely Beebe does a phenomenal job. We have received so many compliments on them. Keely owns and operates Dance Studio 136 in Massillon. She really helps teach the girls and is run very professionally. The girls give so much of their time and talents to make the Legends and the community a better place to live and raise a family. Our mascot Slappy is in the mix with the players and dance team. Slappy is loved by so many and gets mobbed every home game by kids.
The most rewardable times of the year are when children are involved with our players and dance team. Our best advertising is anyone who has seen a game. From the dance team and Slappy interacting with future Lady Legends, to the players signing autographs after the games, it is very moving to give back to the kids. I am certain some of the businessmen in the community who have helped the Legends organization is because of the love for kids. It is great to see a player move up to another level, like Michael Doss when he gives back to his community as he did Saturday night, to encourage kids to follow their dreams.
We are returning for our fifth season! Despite our challenges with the civic center and negative press remarks (kicking off our 09 schedule on a Sunday, if we leave will anyone hear or are we coming back). We asked fans, businesses, community, the movers and shakers to Love Our Legends!!! We ask you to get along side of the best family entertainment in the County and help make this our best year ever! Sam Burquin, WHBC/Legends great sports announcer is such a great motivator, continues to bring high energy and professionalism to his work says what a close to the season! Unbelievable finish! We would like to thank all our sponsors, media partners, marketing committee, local businessmen, chamber affiliates, front office, volunteers, players, coaches, dance team, Slappy, family and fans for their continued support. The dream begins here with the Canton Legends and ends here with the Professional Football Hall of Fame! What a future story to tell someday. (Love Our Legends... Canton and HOF Legends). Get involved and be a part of the dream. As Steve Coons says drink some of the cool aid for his restoration vision, we ask you to Love Our Legends! Contact our office if we can get you an 09 tickets or sponsorship package at 330 453 8440.
