TUPELO -The Mississippi MudCats have the luxury of much more time to prepare for this week's road challenge.
After the team's top three coaches and the star quarterback walked away last Thursday, the MudCats had less than 24 hours left to prepare for their bus trip to Augusta, Ga.
It's a trip that was a lot more enjoyable, interim head coach William McCarthy said, when returning with a win that improved the team's record to a sparkling 12-1 -and made him 1-0 as a head coach.
"Everything is better after a win," he said Monday, as he broke down film from Saturday's 36-21 win and worked on plans for Saturday's game at Fayetteville, N.C.
This week, new starting quarterback Aries Nelson will get many more than the "10 to 20 snaps" he got last week after QB Tommy Jones' departure, McCarthy said.
The team will be working out in the late afternoon at Robins Field all this week in preparation for their regular-season finale.
The happiest MudCat on Monday may have been majority owner Jim Waide, who was clearly tickled with his team's performance under difficult circumstances.
"This team, they just refused to lose," Waide said. "The one thing so exciting about this win ... when the odds seemed so heavily against them, they really set an example for thus community. I'm really happy."
The MudCats' final home appearance of their second season will be July 5, in a first-round playoff game against Columbus.
