Lucian Scott (71) is the elder statesman on an Arizona offensive line that has allowed a league-low one sack all season. Scott will hang up his football cleats after the 2008 season.
Saying that "it's getting harder and harder to get out of bed each week," and wanting to spend more time with his family in Oregon, Adrenaline offensive lineman Lucian Scott has decided to retire from football at season's end.
The 34-year-old Scott, the oldest member of a line that has allowed a league-low one sack all season, has played professionally the past eight years, six of those with the Adrenaline's arch-rival Wyoming Cavalry.
"It's really more physical than anything else," said the 295-pound Scott. "I'm 34 and the guys I'm going up against are 24 or 25 and they seem to just keep getting bigger and faster every year.
"I've had to rely on proper technique to go up against these young guys whose technique isn't always the best. But your body tells you when it's time, and my time's up at the end of the season."
The Adrenaline originally signed Scott to play center. Instead he played on the defensive line early in the season before shifting over to offense where himself, center Matt Mason and fellow guard Dorsey Mitchell have formed a chemistry that has yielded just the one sack in 341 pass attempts.
Also playing into his decision was the health of his son, 7-year-old Dante, who is recovering from an ailment that could require a kidney replacement.
"I really want to do more things with my kids," Scott said. "Things like taking walks, swimming, teaching them things and learning things from them. It might sound like small stuff, but they were things that I didn't get while growing up."
Scott doesn't want to walk away from the game very far. He would like to coach football in the near future.
"I really like being around kids," he said. "I coached some junior high football and I was a social worker for the State of Wyoming for three years. I get along well with kids and I'll always love the game."
NOTES - After missing the last two games with injuries, quarterbacks Chad DeGrenier and Jason Swanson returned to practice on Wednesday. But Adrenaline head coach Andrew Moore said that "as of now" Ronnie Simpson would start against New Mexico Monday at Tim's Toyota Center and Keith Poole would be his backup ... Wide receiver Maurice Bryant has three straight 100+-yard receiving games, the first Adrenaline player to do so this season ... The 89 rushing yards this past Saturday in New Mexico was an Adrenaline team high this year. Robert Jones' 55 yards on the ground was second individually, only to Paris Moore's 66 against Utah on April 20.
