Wildcats home after upset loss at Utah last week
The New Mexico Wildcats’ nemesis, the Arizona Adrenaline, visit Santa Ana Star Center Saturday for a 7:05 p.m. kickoff and another American Indoor Football Association contest.
The Wildcats (2-8) are coming off a 40-38 loss at last-place Utah (1-9) on Saturday. Neither the Wildcats’ Web site nor the site of the Saints had posted game statistics as of Wednesday morning.
Usual return man and pass receiver Darren Halliburton played quarterback for the Wildcats in an experiment of sorts, as former quarterback Ronnie Simpson had been traded to Arizona, but not seeing any action in the Adrenaline’s game last week.
The Adrenaline (8-2) won at league-leading Wyoming (9-1), 55-40, on Friday. Wyoming had been the only undefeated team in the 16-team AIFA.
The Adrenaline outscored the Cavalry 28-12 in the decisive fourth quarter for the important victory.
It was quite a turnaround for the Adrenaline defense, which had allowed the Cavalry to put up 72 points and scored on each possession in beating the Adrenaline 72-56 in Prescott Valley three weeks earlier.
The ‘Cats and Adrenaline, who have clinched a playoff berth, have met four times already and meet again June 16 in Prescott Valley,
New Mexico then has two games remaining, both home, against Wyoming (June 21) and Utah (June 28), the latter game ultimately determining who winds up in the cellar.
The fledgling league’s West Division of the Western Conference, which houses the Wildcats, Arizona, Utah and Wyoming, features anything but parity: Wyoming has shown it’s the best team in the league, Arizona can beat everyone except the Cavalry, and the Wildcats can only beat the lowly Saints.
Utah is coached by Michael Mink, one of the AIFA owners. Of the four new Western Conference teams, the Saints have had the most difficulty in getting off the ground this year, as evidenced by slow turnout for home games, and other details, including their bus breakdown last month on their trip here.
