Mississippi MudCats Defensive “Star” Derrick White Returns
(Tupelo, MS) The Mississippi MudCats of the American Indoor Football Association announce the signing of Defensive Linebacker Derrick White, who is returning for the remainder of their upcoming 2008 season.
White (6’3-240”) has signed a contract to play the remainder of the 2008 season with the MudCats, after playing the first part of the season as a rookie for the Arizona Rattlers of the AFL. He played in 6 games for Arizona and had 10 solo tackles and 9 assists for a total of 19 tackles, 1 sack and 3 pass breakups.
Derrick led the MudCats in tackles in 2007, with 125 solo tackles and also led the AIFA league with 23.5 sacks. In high school, Derrick was an All American selection with over 100 tackles his senior year at Creek Side High School in Fairburn, GA just outside of Atlanta. He joined the MudCats last season after his position as a standout linebacker
for Clark Atlanta and the University of Georgia. He graduated in 2005 from Division II Clark Atlanta, where he was named to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s All-Conference First Team defense for 2005. He played in 11 games and recorded 97 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks, all three good for second place on the team. He led the team with four interceptions and forced two fumbles. He transferred to Clark Atlanta from the Georgia Bulldogs, where he played for the Bulldogs from 2002-2004. In 2004, he recorded 38 tackles and one fumble recovery as a junior. As a sophomore, he had 37 tackles, one interception, and two fumble recoveries.
Derrick is most known for having a non-stop motor on the field and superb pass rush skills. When asked about Derrick, MudCats Co-Offensive Coordinator / Player Personnel Coach Kirk Broussard said, “Derrick is truly a diamond in the rough that has now shined through. He was the glue for our defense last year, I knew I had hit the jack pot when I found him during the recruiting season for the 2007 season, and I am glad he’s back with us for the remainder of the 2008 season. He will be a huge asset by replacing some of our players who are out with injuries.”
Updated information on the MudCats can be found at www.mississippimudcats.com, including a live internet broadcast of all away games. The MudCats have a potential division playoff on July 5th or a possible conference playoff game on July 11th.
