Adrenaline upset Wyoming Special to the Courier
Friday, May 30, 2008
CASPER, Wyo. - The Adrenaline altered their travel plans and flew out of Las Vegas on Thursday. Then hit the jackpot on Friday.
In a game in which the Adrenaline were featuring a 34-year-old rookie quarterback, and were playing without receiver Quincy Jackson and injured quarterbacks Chad DeGrenier (heel) and Jason Swanson (thigh bruise), they somehow pulled the right strings in knocking off the previously-undefeated Wyoming Cavalry 55-40 Friday night in Casper.
Arizona got significant contributions from several different sources, but none more than quarterback Keith Poole. Playing his first game ever of indoor football, the recently-signed Poole completed 19 of 32 passes for 223 yards, five touchdowns, and no interceptions.
"My gut is almost always right, and my gut was that Keith Poole was going to have a great game," said head coach Andrew Moore whose team improves to 8-2 on the season while Wyoming falls to 9-1. "He played a fantastic game, never lost his poise and made the big plays when we needed them. But really everybody played huge in this game."
Led by the defensive front of Fernandez Shaw, Josh Duran, Sydney Hayes and Cornelius Fuamatu, the Adrenaline were able to keep constant pressure on big Wyoming quarterback Matt Strand.
With Strand throwing several hurried passes and the Adrenaline secondary locking down Wyoming's high powered receivers, Arizona defensive back Antar Brame had two interceptions on the night.
Arizona's first lead in the second half came on a big fourth-down play when Poole hit Maurice Bryant on a 12-yard touchdown pass that put the Adrenaline ahead 27-22
But the TD that put the momentum all in the Adrenaline's favor came early in the fourth period.
Once again on fourth down, despite being rushed, Poole was able to find wide receiver Eddie Byrd in the end zone for an 8-yard TD. That put the Adrenaline ahead 35-28, and they never relinquished the lead.
To put some icing on the cake, Poole hooked up with David Penland with 2:14 to go, and then Robert Jones wrapped up the celebratory evening by scoring twice in the game's final minute to put an end to a wild night in the AIFA.
"The defensive line did a great job tonight, and made it easier for us to cover," Brame said. "But it was an overall team victory."
Bryant caught eight passes for 131 yards and three touchdowns on the night, while Penland and Byrd hauled in two TDs.
Once again, the offensive line, which has yielded a league low one sack all season, gave Poole plenty of time to throw, and dominated Wyoming's normally potent defensive front.
The victory means that the Adrenaline now trail the Cavalry by just one game in the West Division. The two teams meet at Tim's Toyota Center in the final game of the season on June 28. Should both teams win their remaining games prior to the season-ending matchup, that battle would likely represent who gets home field advantage come playoff time.
"We believed in ourselves from the beginning," Robert Jones said. "I played with Chief (Poole) with the Phoenix Rebels and knew that he was capable of playing like this."
The Adrenaline are back in action June 7 at New Mexico before returning home to play New Mexico again.

The Adrenaline were just flat out physical Their D was much improved and our O and D line were having problems all night long. It always seemed the Cav's were 1 step behind. Whether it was on O with Strand throwing a step after the break or on D just not getting to the Qb in time. Congrats You deserve it!!!!

This is certainly the best thing that could've happened for the Cavalry in an off-field sense. There's at least one other truly legitimate team in the West.

Everyone kept talking about the AZ-WY rivalry. You can only have a true rivalry when two teams battle and beat each other. Now that AZ traveled to WY and beat them in their own house the rivalry is officialy on. This was a sweet victory for AZ and they simply wanted it more and played like it on the field.

By DAVID BUCK Star-Tribune staff writer Sunday, June 1, 2008 12:18 AM MDT Cavs suffer first defeat
Humbled and shocked. Those were two of the emotions going through Wyoming players after the Cavalry's 55-40 loss to Arizona on Friday at the Casper Events Center.
The loss was the Cavalry's first of the year and means that no American Indoor Football Association team will be undefeated this season.
"I want to say that we was on Cloud 9 and thought that if were undefeated, teams would just lay down for us," Cavs running back James Jones said. "But Arizona is not one of those teams and they took advantage of us thinking that way. It was a humbling game."
Wyoming's offense, which was the best in the AIFA going into the game, played its sloppiest game of the season. The usually sure-handed Jones fumbled the ball on the Cavs' second offensive play and quarterback Matt Strand was constantly under pressure and forced to make quick throws all night.
"I don't want to say it was a sign, but I haven't dropped the ball all season," Jones said of his fumble. "When I did, it happened and I figured out then it's not going be a game where I can come and just play."
One of the only things that went right for the Cavs was the Strand-to-Johnnie Young combination. Young caught four passes for 85 yards and three touchdowns.
"It was nice to actually get in and get to play," Young said. "... I came in, got to play my part, and it worked out all right for me."
Young said Wyoming (9-1) was complacent going into the game. The team had only one close game before the loss -- a 72-56 victory at Arizona (8-2) on May 11.
"We played off emotion instead of playing off how we play, our game," Young said. "We just weren't ready. ... We got into a game where the (other) team was actually playing and we fell apart. It was a learning experience."
Next week's game should be less of a learning experience for Wyoming. The Cavs play the Utah Saints, a team they've beaten four times this season by a combined score of 319-64.
WATCH OUT FOR THOSE BOARDS: Wyoming receiver Dante Dudley had a scare after diving head-first into the dasher boards for a pass early in the third quarter. Players and coaches kneeled around Dudley as he lay on the field. About two minutes later the receiver walked off the field without any help. Later in the quarter, Dudley left the Events Center in an ambulance as a precautionary measure.
"I know how that wall feels," Cavs receiver Johnnie Young said. "I've hit it a time or two myself. There is no give and your body just keeps on going right through it."
'THE BEST FANS': When Arizona coach Andrew Moore called, Wyoming fans answered. Adrenaline player Antar Brame had an asthma attack near the end of the third quarter, and didn't have an inhaler. Moore and some Arizona players came to the announcers table and asked the announcer to see if anyone in the stands had an inhaler. Someone did and Brame was soon OK.
"We had a player have an asthma attack and when I asked the audience for a puffer, everybody in this audience that heard me stood up, checked their purse ... asked around," Moore said. "I think you guys have the best fans out here. I think it's absolutely amazing that the fans did this for us."
FAMILY AFFAIR: If fans couldn't tell by the name on the roster, the size gave the relationship away. John Strand played offensive line for Wyoming against Arizona. He is the younger brother of starting quarterback Matt Strand. The Strands are Wyoming's tallest players. John is listed at 6-foot-8, while Matt is 6-4. John Strand filled in for Chase Olsen, who missed his second game with a knee injury.
"He did a pretty good job," Cavs coach Dan Maciejczak said. "He hasn't played football since he got done at Chadron (State). We'll get him better, we'll get our whole offensive line better."
MORE 'HAWKS: Cavs defensive lineman Rodney Wasche wasn't the only player sporting a Mohawk during the game as Arizona offensive lineman Matt Mason also had one.

FRIDAY: Arizona 55, Wyoming 40
RECORDS: Adrenaline (8-2); Cavalry (9-1).
TASTING DEFEAT: Friday's loss was the Cavalry's first of the season. Going into the game the team was the only undefeated team in the American Indoor Football Association.
HE SAID IT: "I want to say that we was on Cloud 9 and thought that if were undefeated, teams would just lay down for us. But Arizona is not one of those teams and they took advantage of us thinking that way. It was a humbling game." -- Cavs running back James Jones.

Just 2 good teams that went at it and it was AZ's night. These teams also played a close game in Prescott, AZ that the Cavalry won 72-56. It was a one score lead game for most of the night.
The last game of the season is AZ-WY on June 28 in Prescott, AZ. It should be a good one.

The stats don't really impress me, and shouldn't impress anyone else either.....The two worst teams in the league are in the West, so AZ and WY can pad their stats everytime they play those guys.

I don't know about that. Florida and Canton could make a case for being at the bottom. Also, the West Division has gotten tighter as Utah and NM have both improved in the second half of the season.
We'll see in the playoffs.
