The Florence Phantoms are now on top of the division standing with a record of 5-4. We are boasting the first winning record since last years' season opener against the Carolina Speed, after Saturdays win at the Florence Civic Center. The Phantoms defeated the 0-9 Florida Stingrays 58-13, in front of a crowd of 1800 fans. Coach Taveres Bowens stated, "The defense played a complete game and I am pleased with how my team secured the victory after the half."
The victory was much needed as it allowed the Phantoms to break the .500 barrier, win the home, and home series with the Stingrays. This started our 3 game home stand out on the right foot. The next opponent will be the Erie River Rats led by rookie QB Rod Rutherford. Rutherford who has only played 5 games as a River Rat is undefeated since his debut. This weeks' game offers an interesting match up of Rod Rutherford, who was released by the Steelers after winning a Super Bowl Ring, and Omar Jacobs, who replace Rutherford with the Steelers 5th Round of the 2006 draft. Erie's defensive back Jovon Johnson, who played collegiately at the University of Iowa, also played with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The River rats are 8-2 upon coming to Florence May 23rd for Bike Night at the Civic Center, with possible playoff implications this is another must win game for the Phantoms.
Please join us for this pre-Memorial Day game as we look to pound Erie and send them packing. Tickets are on sale now and as low as $7.
