Adrenaline can’t slow Cavalry in battle for first
PRESCOTT VALLEY - The Wyoming Cavalry scored on every possession Sunday at Tim's Toyota Center.
And, as if they needed it, they got some help from the Adrenaline.
Put the two together and Wyoming proved unequivocally that it is still the best in the West, rolling to a highly entertaining 72-56 win in front of about 3,200 Mother's Day fans.
The Adrenaline, now 5-2 on the season, entered the fourth period trailing only 50-43. But the poise and patience of Wyoming quarterback Matt Strand, and the inability of Arizona to get stops on third, and fourth down situations, proved too much to overcome as Wyoming improves to 7-0 and is now firmly implanted in the driver's season in the AIFA's West Division.
"We had blown coverages, we had 14 points that we gave away, you just can't make mental errors and expect to beat a team like this," Adrenaline head coach Andrew Moore said. "You play the way you practice. If you don't wrap up in practice, you won't wrap up in games."
Moore assures that "changes will be made" defensively in the coming week as the Adrenaline travel to improving New Mexico on May 20.
But the Arizona offense, while putting a solid 56 points on the board, didn't help its own cause on a few occasions. Trailing only 22-14 early in the second quarter, tailback Ty Evans, while falling to the turf, tried an ill-advised pitch to quarterback Chad DeGrenier that was promptly scooped up by linebacker Jeff Main and taken into the end zone to stretch Wyoming's lead to 30-14.
From that point on, the Adrenaline exchanged blow-for-blow with Wyoming, and even pulled to within seven when DeGrenier hit Maurice Bryant on touchdown passes of 17 and 3 yards in the third quarter.
But the Cavalry's uncanny knack of converting fourth downs kept the Adrenaline from ever getting any closer. They made good on all three of their fourth down situations on the night.
"We knew that Arizona had a lot of talent and a lot of great players," said Strand, who completed 24 of 43 for 283 yards and six touchdowns, several of them to wide open receivers. He hooked up with six different teammates on the night.
"We try to give teams a variety of different things to look at so that come crunch time they can't bank on any one thing. Right now we're playing at a high level. Arizona is maybe one notch below us."
The Adrenaline ran the ball a season-high 17 times on the night for just 25 yards as Evans rushed for 20 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries and former Prescott High grad Ryan Goodell ran in another TD from 4 yards out late in the game.
DeGrenier also threw 4 touchdown passes on the night, three of them to Bryant, who caught 9 passes while Quincy Jackson hauled in 11 and David Penland 4.
"It comes down to them executing a little bit better than we did," said Adrenaline linebacker Nick Hannah, who will have a tryout with the San Jose SaberCats of Arena1 on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"There were some plays that we were real close. In a close game with two good teams, sometimes the little things are what ends up deciding it."
