Saturday when Saints visit
Last-place Utah visits Santa Ana Star Center Saturday evening at 7:05, as the New Mexico Wildcats play their second home game in 15 days.
The Wildcats (1-5) are coming off an 80-34 drubbing at first-pace Wyoming (6-0) last Thursday in Casper.
It was their second loss to the Cavalry this season. Wyoming beat the ‘Cats 74-26 there on April 20.
Utah (0-6) lost a 43-22 game to visiting Arizona on Monday evening.
The Wildcats’ lone win came at the expense of the Saints, 53-40, on April 5.
The Wildcats are seemingly getting better in some facets of the game, but find themselves playing from behind early in their games.
In their April 26 home opener, Arizona scored the game’s first 20 points and 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, after the Wildcats had twice pulled within one point.
Last Thursday, the Cavalry scored first and last and had let the Wildcats creep within striking distance at 20-14 before going on a 38-6 run for some breathing room.
Wildcats quarterback Ronnie Simpson, sacked seven times by Arizona, was sacked eight times by the Cavalry. Simpson completed 15 of 27 passes, had one picked off, and threw for 222 yards.
Anthony Montgomery, Lawrence Pullen, Darren Halliburton and Landrick Brody caught one TD pass apiece from Simpson.
If one looks at the statistics from the game, you’d think the Wildcats had won after having the ball in their possession for 40:54, compared to just 19:06 for the Cavalry. And the Cavalry’s total offense surpassed New Mexico’s by only 36 yards, 247-211.
The point spread in the game was primarily due to Wyoming running back James Jones, who had four TD runs of four or fewer yards, plus a 49-yard kickoff return. Add in six points for his three two-point conversions and he had 36 points of his own.
Wildcat tracks: The Wildcats’ next three games are at the Star Center, where they face Arizona on May 20 and Wyoming four nights later.
… The team has a new six-game ticket package that allows fans to see the six remaining home games for as little as $36. Check the team’s Web page (www.newmexicowildcats.com) for more.
