For the first time this season, the Arizona Adrenaline played a tight game. In the end, defense made the difference.
The Adrenaline (4-1) had seven sacks, including three during a pivotal fourth quarter possession by New Mexico (1-4), and dodged a bullet in beating the Wildcats, 63-46, in front of an estimated 4,200 fans in the first-ever indoor football game at the Santa Ana Star Center at Rio Rancho.
New Mexico pulled within 41-40 with 12:36 to go in the fourth quarter before Fernandez Shaw, Josh Duran and Sydney Hayes recorded consecutive sacks to give the Adrenaline the ball deep in New Mexico territory.
Quarterback Chad DeGrenier then hit Quincy Jackson on an 8-yard touchdown pass to steal momentum away from the Wildcats and helped send the Adrenaline to their fourth win against one defeat.
DeGrenier threw eight touchdown passes on the night, four of them to Jackson and three to Maurice Bryant.
"It's kind of good that we had to face some adversity," said Shaw, who had four sacks on the night. "We all had to come together as a team and play on both sides of the ball when we needed it most."
After the victory, the Adrenaline now enjoy 10 days off before traveling to Utah on May 6.
"Yes I think this win will help us in the long run," Adrenaline coach Andrew Moore said. "During the course of the season, you're always going to have some close games and we showed that we can pull together as a family."
Jackson had 11 catches, Bryant hauled in six and David Penland caught five more.
DeGrenier, who has now thrown for 28 touchdowns without an interception on the season, was 22-for-32 with 205 yards.
The Adrenaline jumped out to a quick 20-0 lead in the first period as DeGrenier hooked up with Bryant twice and Jackson once. However, the Wildcats would not be denied as they outscored the Adrenaline 21-0 in the third quarter.
In his Adrenaline debut, kicker Carlos Ojeda, who was acquired in a recent trade from New Mexico, tore a tendon in a toe on his right foot and will be lost for the season.
