Marvin Stone led the Augusta Spartans to a 10-6 record and a World Indoor Football League championship last season. After he signs a contract this afternoon, the star wide receiver and league MVP from last year will look to put together a similar season as a member of the Augusta Colts.
"He's a playmaker," Colts head coach and director of football operations Bubba Diggs said. "Last year he was one of our leaders so I'm excited about him coming back now on a new team with a whole new experience."
Stone will sign the contract and become the Colts' designated franchise player at a news conference this afternoon at Famous Dave's Bar-B-Que in Augusta.
Colts general manager John Sisson said the team also plans to unveil its new logo at the 4 p.m. news conference. Diggs was introduced along with the new team colors of navy blue, Texas orange and Vegas gold at a similar news conference Nov. 6.
"It's going to be exciting," Sisson said. "A logo puts a stamp on the whole franchise. This is our brand."
Stone, who led the WIFL in scoring (254 points), all-purpose yards (2,308) and touchdown receptions (38) last year will become the fourth Colts signee in the young franchise's history.
The Josey alum will join three other former Augusta Spartans -- Chip Dykes (Josey), John Cratic (Laney) and Anthony Young (North Augusta) -- as local players already on the squad. Sisson said the roster will continue to grow as the season draws near.
"There is going to be a nucleus from the Spartans, but there will be competition at training camp," Sisson said. "Just because someone was a Spartan doesn't mean they're automatically a Colt."
The Augusta Colts, a new indoor football franchise in its first year of operation, will begin regular season play March 13 as a member of the American Indoor Football Association. The Colts are taking over the title of Augusta's indoor football team from the Spartans -- a now defunct team that had played indoor football in Augusta since 2006.
The Augusta Colts purchased the AIFA franchise rights from the Spartans and will join the Florida Stingrays, Mississippi Mudcats and Columbus Lions in the AIFA's South Division. Only one of the four teams will advance to the playoffs.
Sisson said a formal announcement introducing the Augusta Colts' new ownership group will happen in the next few weeks.
