As you may have noticed. The Augusta Spartans have a new name. They will now be called the CSRA Spartans. It stands for Central Savannah River Area. To give you some idea as to why this was done. The CSRA consists of eight counties, which includes Augusta. The local council members in these areas have had a tug-o-war against other areas. James Brown the Godfather of Soul is from Augusta. And before his death, they were going to dedicate the arena name to him. But the council members decided not to with a vote. They however went against their judgment and dedicated it anyways. The local citizens rebelled against attending anything at that arena. Then one of the outter counties got a baseball team. So the fans said, "Why go to Augusta, when we have our very own team here?" So, this decision to rename the team is for the better. As you will see in future announcements.

The citizens of the CSRA may have made a pledge to not attend any events in the arena, but the Spartans have drawn well in the last couple seasons so there are people coming from somewhere.

I think this could lead to new facilities down the road. And more community involvement.

That's the same thing a team rep told me last week......
It's a great arena, perfect for this level of football. I'd be glad to have it in my town regardless of whos name was on it.

Is there an official announcement on this anywhere? There is now, sorta chronicle.augusta.com/stories/110207/spa_150199.shtmlSpartans plan image overhaul By Steve Sanders| Staff Writer Friday, November 02, 20073 A new league won't be the only change for the Augusta Spartans indoor football team next spring. The Spartans, who in October announced their move from the World Indoor Football League to the American Indoor Football Association for the upcoming season, are expected to make several major changes in the organization this off-season. It started Oct. 18 with the hiring of John Sisson as the team's new general manager. He said fans and supporters can expect the team to improve its image in the community. The Spartans later this month will announce a new team name, an altered logo, new ownership partners, new staff and a new mascot. "We've got a wonderful legacy, but we're ready to take it to a new level," Sisson said. "We've got a championship team on the field, and now it's time to turn it up in the community." Sisson has worked in the local mascot and entertainment industry and for the Augusta Lynx, the Augusta GreenJackets and the Aiken Foxhounds. Sisson and Spartans coach Bubba Diggs said the on-the-field product won't change. Augusta, led by several former area high school standouts, went 10-6 and won the WIFL championship over Columbus in June. The Spartans are scheduled to open the 2008 AIFA schedule in March against Columbus. "I think things are going to be really good. (Sisson) has ties to minor-league ball, he's been around and he knows what to expect," Diggs said.

I just got off the phone with a resident of the green city, (that's what some folks call Augusta) and she says that the people have never been happy with the arena because it wasn't what it was cracked up to be during the pre-construction hype stage.
The James Brown thing is fairly recent, they changed the name a short time before he died. It was formerly just the Augusta Civic Center. It wasn't the fact that they named the thing after the Godfather of soul that made people mad, it was that they changed the name in spite of the outcome of the vote.
Now as far as the whole CSRA thing, it will be great, you'll see! Right now we should follow blindly and not question it. Wait a sec
...Sorry, that was the wrong canned answer....
They're doing what the feel like they have to do to put butts in seats. Big ups to the man in black ( Jimmy Young not Johnny Cash) and co....Yea, that's better.
I should really be sleeping....
