I have heard some rumblings coming from a few different sources that there is a change brewing in the Baltimore AIFA team. I do not know for sure all the details regarding this and i do not know if my sources are correct. Yes, there is more than one person who has told me this.
Without going into too much detail... I will ask this question and leave it open for discussion/debate/debunking...
Are the Baltimore Blackbirds out of the AIFA and is there a new Baltimore AIFA team on the way?
Discuss... debate... or debunk!

Discuss... debate... or debunk! Well first of all, I tend to believe what you say dave. For folks that don't know which is probably all of you except dave and myself, Dave and I have our seats together in Row 1 at the Blackbirds games and travel to the games together. On a few occasions now, Dave has tipped me off to some movings and shakings in regards to the Blackbirds, and so far those rumblings have been 100% correct. I don't know who the sources are, but they have been spot on. With all that being said, I wonder if a new team comes to Baltimore, would they possibly be called the Blackbirds? Just wondering who owns the naming rights. Of course, i am waiting for my jersey to show up. I knew I should have waitied till next season to order. hehehehe

Kevin,
I believe that Alexander Austin owns the right to the name Baltimore Blackbirds. The team was originally a part of the now defunct EIFL, which was run by the corrupt Jim Terry. The Baltimore Blackbirds bailed on the EIFL yet retained the name. I imagine that the new team... if this rumor proves to be true, would have to use a different name. But the interesting question remains... where will the new team play and where will the Blackbirds play? I still believe that the AIFA holds the contract with 1st Mariner Arena. Does this mean that the Blackbirds will need to find a new playing field? And where? What other venue in Baltimore can host an indoor sporting event? I do not know of any.

But the bigger question for the local fans would be, IF all this is true, and IF Baltimore got a new AIFA team, would the fans follow the Blackbirds to wherever they go or support the new team. My quess is that unless the Blackbirds are moving (upward?) to the AFL2 or AFL itself (which is very very doubtful given their record last season) the majority of the fans would either support the new team, or give up on indoor football all together, seeing it as a half assed league that can't get their act right. I believe that the big determining factor will be once fans start to hear the details if this change and what brought it on. Is the owner bailing because he doesn't have the capital to run a team? Is the league kicking them out for poor play or business practices or both? Believe it or not, it can make a difference to the fans. The Baltimore Colts move to Indy is a very good example. even though somewhat different.
