TUPELO -Tommy Jones will return to the starting lineup as quarterback for the Mississippi MudCats' playoff run, head coach Brian Brents confirmed this week.
Backup Bart Gloyd got his first start last weekend, in a 53-47 win on the road against the Erie (Pa.) Freeze -a victory that assured the team of a home playoff opener.
"Tommy is still our starter," Brents said. "We got the opportunity to get a good look at Bart and he did a great job. But Tommy had led us the whole season, and he wants to finish what he started."
Gloyd completed 25-of-37 passes for 385 yards and six touchdowns against Erie. He quickly found a comfort zone with receivers Josh Smith and Howard Glmore, who accounted for 20 catches and all six TDs.
With Gloyd taking the snaps, Mississippi's offense scored touchdowns on four of its first five possessions and also put the team in position to try a field goal at the end of the half that was blocked.
The MudCats opened the second half with three consecutive scoring drives to take a 46-33 advantage.
"Bart really underscored that he's capable of stepping in and leading this team," Brents said. "We know that if anything happens to Tommy during the playoffs, like an injury, that we'll be in good hands at that position."
Taking an open date into account, Jones -who's averaging better than five touchdowns a game this season -hasn't played since the MudCats' loss at Florence, S.C., on May 19.
The team's AIFA playoff opener is set for here on Sunday, June 10 against an opponent -either Tallahassee or Carolina -to be determined later this week.
It all depends on the outcome of Saturday's game between South Division leader Lakeland and Montgomery. A Lakeland win sends the MudCats against Tallahassee; Mississippi would win the South Division regular-season title and play Carolina in the first round if Lakeland loses.
During the open week before the playoffs, the MudCats were looking forward to getting some rare time on the BancorpSouth Arena turf. Due to arena scheduling concerns, the team has spent more time lately practicing outdoors.
"It's great to get into the arena for the first time in a while," Brents said. "It's a great opportunity for us to polish some things, especially on offense, out there on the turf."
