The Tallahassee Titans are in a financial fourth-and-long - but a former NFL tight end may provide a franchise-saving catch.
Titans owner David Morris said he is talking with Mark Brammer, who played for the Buffalo Bills from 1980-84, about investing in the indoor football team. Morris said it is too early to tell if Brammer would be a minority or majority owner or if he would have a role on the Titans' coaching staff.
“He recognized the talent out of Tallahassee last year,” Morris said. “He likes the community involvement that we had.”
Morris said he and Brammer would then seek out a local investor or group to complete the Titans' ownership. He added that Brammer, an All-American at Michigan State, was coming to Tallahassee to visit with team officials.
The discussions have convinced Civic Center director Ron Spencer to grant the Titans another extension to return the $30,000 that the team borrowed from its security deposit in April to cover operating expenses. The Titans missed their initial deadline, which was last Monday, and Spencer had extended the deadline to Friday.
“I think the person he's talking to is credible,” said Spencer, who talked with Brammer on Friday.
The Titans struggled financially at the end of their inaugural season, failing to make payroll to players, coaches and front-office staff and pay debts to various local businesses. Many of the debts remain unpaid, team officials said.
The team is also in search of a league, although Morris hopes the Titans will be allowed to return to the American Indoor Football Association once he's able to show the league that the team is back on its feet financially.
