Titans' clash matches top two QBs
By Bob Ferrante
Arena football passing statistics appear inflated simply because of the nature of the sport. With a 50-yard field, yards and points accumulate in a hurry.
But Titans quarterback Ben Dougherty and Mississippi's Tommy Jones are already putting up some impressive numbers this season.
While Jones has 24 TDs for the Mudcats (4-0), he hit the 100-touchdown mark at Odessa in 2006. It is among the highest totals ever in an indoor football season.
The Titans (3-0) are also lighting up the scoreboard. Dougherty has 17 TD passes, putting him on pace for 79 this season. And the Titans also have a strong running game: tailback James Jackson has six touchdowns.
The Titans host Mississippi on Saturday in a battle of the Southern Division's top two teams. Both are averaging 57 points per game.
"It's going to be another tough game," Titans coach Keven Jackson said. "It's another test for us."
Welcome back
Wide receiver Patrick Harrington missed the Titans' first two games, and much of the preseason, with a nagging hamstring injury.
But the former Florida State walk-on made the most of his first start on Saturday, catching five passes for a game-high 97 yards - including a 39-yard touchdown grab from Dougherty in the first quarter.
Harrington said it was difficult to sit and watch the team play, but he knew that rest was the best way to recover from the injury.
"That's why I sat out so long," Harrington said. "It was great being back out there Saturday."
His return does make it tougher on Titans coaches, who typically only activate four wide receivers per game.
"Any eight of our wide receivers can go anywhere and start," Jackson said.
Injury update
Jackson said defensive back Cha Cha Berry (broken finger) and defensive lineman/linebacker Carlos Channelle (ankle) are out for Saturday's game.
Going nowhere
Reading attempted to run against the Titans on Saturday but had little success. While the Express did have a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs, they had just four yards on 10 carries. INDOOR FOOTBALL
Saturday's game: Mississippi (4-0) at Tallahassee Titans (3-0), 7 p.m. at the Civic Center. Radio: 106.1 FM.
