Fans flock indoors for some football By Bob Ferrante
Indoor football is back - for a second time.
But the tailgaters were in midseason form at the Civic Center, packing the parking lots hours before the start of Saturday night's home opener as the Tallahassee Titans played the Gulf Coast Raiders. The Titans started the party themselves at 3 p.m., and fans quickly began to trickle in. Tents were set up with activities and musicians, and several radio stations set up remote broadcasts.
“I like it,” said Leon High junior-varsity football player Hunter Davis, who caught a red, white and blue AIFA football during Saturday's game. “The season's over, so I can come here and have a good time.”
The excitement of local fans is just what owner David Morris and team officials had been hoping for on Saturday. More than 1,500 season-ticket holders to the inaugural season of the Titans were joined by a large walk-up crowd that caught its first glimpse of indoor football since the Tallahassee Thunder folded in 2002.
“On our inaugural home game, the team and organization have exceeded everyone's expectations,” Morris said.
Titans officials estimated the crowd at 5,500, enough to fill about two-thirds of the Civic Center's lower bowl.
