Jackson ready to lead Titans Tallahassee opens season at Carolina tonight By Bob Ferrante
Keven Jackson has waited a long time to be a head coach.
He finally gets his chance tonight. "I always wanted to be a head coach; I always wanted to be one in college," said Jackson, whose Tallahassee Titans open the 2007 season tonight at Carolina. "I'm anxious to see how well I manage the game."
Jackson accepted the challenge of being the Titans' first coach in mid-September - and he has had only a handful of days off since. The former University of Alabama All-America defensive back has kept busy not only searching for players and assistant coaches, but also meeting fans and participating in events at area schools and around Tallahassee.
Titans owner David Morris had no hesitation about hiring Jackson, who won the American Indoor Football Association title as Canton's defensive coordinator in 2006.
"They won it because of his defense," Morris said. "So I went and stole him."
Jackson hopes to steal a few games with defense - not exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you think of arena football. But he also has an offense that includes former Florida A&M stars Ben Dougherty and Rod Miller, as well as former Florida State fullback James Coleman.
"I think we have a lot of talent," Jackson said. "I'm very nervous, anxious to see if we're going to step up."
Jackson said wide receiver Patrick Harrington, a former FSU player, would not play on Monday. Harrington has a nagging hamstring injury that has limited him in preseason practices.
