First Day a Success
Tuesday, January 9th 2007 -
Excitement fills the air as players, coaches, staff, interns, and medical staff arrive at the Parkway Arena, the Titans' practice facility. To my suprise, there were even a few spectators. Mostly family members, these loyal fans came to see the start of our championship run. Spirits were high as the players suited up and started stretching.
To the players bewilderment, our staff of Sports Massage Theripists were set up and waiting to give each player a three-minute warm up massage. Our team of theripists are no stranger to the team, having been at 3 of 4 tryouts and our team dinner the night before, but to learn that they will be at every practice and game left them befuddled.
After warming up, doing a little stretching, and getting taped up by our EMT/Intern Ryan, the team came together to finish warm ups and team stretches. The stretch counting was loud and booming as nearly 40 players started coming together. I will admit, I had shivers of excitement and anticipation as the team began to meld. Now that everyone is loose and limber, it was time to start the fun stuff.
The players split into position drills with their individual coaches. DBs ran back-peddle drills, doing push ups for dropped balls; Quarterbacks getting timing down with wide recievers; Linemen worked on leverage and blocking with the full-backs. As Coach Jackson stressed to every player, it's the little things that will take them to the next level ... and each player worked on those little things before moving to one-on-one drills.
One-on-Ones starting showing the true talent of the team. Defensive line against offensive line, a true battle in the trenches insued. Defensive backs covered the wide recievers as the quarterbacks called some routes. And the kicker started warming up his leg. The coaches watched with a smile on their faces. Moving to a full team practice was just fun for everyone. 8 on 8, with no pads mind you, going full speed on a small field. The defense made several outstanding plays that made Coach Jackson run around and shout for joy. The wide recievers made some amazing cuts and fakes to give the quarterback a chance to make an outstanding throw. There was even a run play that went into the endzone, with a great quarterback block!
As the night progressed, the rust and nervousness began to wear off. These players are living with one motto this training camp -- No Regrets. Leave everything on the field, give 100% each play, play as if it will be the last time you take the gridiron. As the conditioning portion of practice ended the night, the players yelled "no regrets" as they sprinted to the other end of the field.
Though it was only the first night of camp, I can honestly write to you that I have never seen a group of players come together in such a little amount of time. I am confident that as we progress toward the Blue and Gold game on the 20th, we will be a force that cannot be stopped! I hope to see you out there!
