PHANTOMS SIGN SEVEN PLAYERS FOR 2008 SEASON
10 December 2007: The Florence Phantom took another step forward with the signing of 7 players for the upcoming 2008 season. After two tryout camps and lots of film study the Phantoms began the signing period with a mix of returning stars, fresh talent and one former NFL player.
Jamain Stephens’ NFL career ended with an injury after seven seasons with both the Steelers and the Bengals. He is determined to return to the NFL and sees the Phantoms as an opportunity to complete that goal. Stephens is a 6’7” tall, 350 lb. defensive lineman who was a number one draft pick by former Steelers coach Bill Cowher. His experience and leadership will help the Phantoms both on the field and off.
Amongst the returning players is Jason Chaney, a 6’1” 295 lb. offensive lineman who will protect the quarterback as well as open holes in the running game for returning backs Jerome Kennedy and Anson Yarborough. Kennedy, from Sumter, was one of the Phantoms representatives in the AIFA All Star game last season. Yarborough, from Darlington, makes this a formidable combination in the back field.
Also, returning are Larry Green and Colby Wright. Green is a versatile player who will fit well in the defensive back field and Wright will resume his kicking duties.
The Phantoms are adding new talent around the returning players as well. Jason Fields will help improve an offensive line with his shear size. At 6’4” tall and 370 lbs. he will be tough to get around. The coaches are very excited about Nick Freet who is an active duty Air Force member stationed at Shaw A.F.B. Freet is a 6’3” tall 230 lb. linebacker and defensive end with plenty of indoor football experience.
The Phantoms will have their third and final tryout session on January 12th at The Byrnes School with registration beginning at 8 a.m. Again the cost is $50 per player.
