Isn't this the way it started in Florence last year? This league is like "Grounghog Day".

It's as though someone yanked the football away from him for the season. Is the owner named Lucy? Was there any reference to him being a "blockhead?"

No, but Bowman's been involved in two teams that still owe people money (Winston-Salem and Myrtle Beach). So this doesn't shock me for a second.

Jack Bowman may be in the indoor football hall of fame but he has his own way of doing things. One of them is to say one thing to the media and another to your face. While the Phantoms may like to pay people after the game, it doesn't (and hasn't) always worked that way - last year and now apparantly this year. It seems the Shannons are cut from the same cloth as Bowman so they should have a long, happy association. It's too bad that the owner, who knows very little about indoor football, has to get involved in the player pesonnel decisions when he has capable football people to do that. Cooper seems to have always been "me, me, me." Even last year there were rumblings from within that he wanted things his way. Not wanting to be totally negative here; 1) at least Florence has a local owner; 2) they're not league owned. We all know what kind of mess that could turn into.

If the Shannons are cut from the same cloth as Bowman, you can expect the "hey, where's my paycheck and why did it bounce" complaints to get louder and louder.

I can't say anything about bowman cause I've only known him for a short while, but I can tell you I've known the Shannon's for a long time. The Shannon family is a very respected in Florence and the Florence area. As far as last season the Shannon's didn't own the team then so how can you say anything about them paying bills when it wasn't them that were suppose to pay the bills, Bowman is just a GM he doesn't have any control over money. If you think about it out of all the people working for the Phantoms the only one complaining about "not getting paid" is a X-Coach who got his ego hurt and couldn't handle it.

The Shannons may very well be respected in the Florence area. Here is what I know about them; in particular Joey: 1) failed to return any phone calls I made about payment of bills, 2) a registered letter went for almost a month without being picked up and signed for, 3) no response to this day from the invoice and letter that was sent registered. This was all done within a month after the Shannons took over full ownership of the Phantoms. The amount owed isn't a huge amount but is a debt that should have been paid (and should still be). I was told by a magistrate that I could sue to get the money but the effort in going to Florence to file the suit and making court appearances isn't worth my time and trouble. I'll just chalk it up to a bad experience and one which I learned many lessons. The Phantoms had major ownership problems last year which anyone that followed the team and majority of posters on this board know all about. The group from Augusta rescued the team from league ownership and the Shannons became partners in the ownership late in the season. Initially all bills were sent to the Augusta group (which sent over reps several times a week to review things and do their best to make things right with the community). The Augusta owners are the ones who had an exihibtion game between the Spartans and Phantoms in Florence as a "fundraiser" so they could finish paying off their bills. They are the ones who paid the coach, management and players and the majority of outstanding bills. They are the ones who went into the business community to help right the wrongs of a roller coaster season. The Shannons are the ones who wanted to sever the ties with Augusta. Was it because Augusta was already in the planning stages of forming the WIFL and the Shannons didn't like that? Was it because someone else other than the Shannos were making decisions on the franchise and they didn't like the decisons made? I don't know. The impression of talking to a couple of people in the Augusta group is that it didn't seem like a friendly split. I don't think I would go as far as saying Coach Brown got his ego hurt and couldn't handle it. From the article, I got the impression that he didn't like players going behind his back and complaining and not getting backed up by his GM and owner. He wanted players disciplined for breaking curfew and he wanted a player that didn't want to do things the coach's way removed from the team. Ownership didn't agree with what Coach Brown wanted to do and overrode that decison.

What people don't understand this isn't last year! This is a new year with new owners..any debt that happened before the Shannon's took over would be on the previous owners right? I don't know anything about last year and Augusta all I know is if I ivested 100's of thousands of dollars in something I would want control over how the organization was run too.

Unfortunately, it doesn't always work out like that. Maybe in the legal sense, they aren't responsible for some of the debts, but the public doesn't care about that. All they know is the "Florence Phantoms" aren't paying for this, or that, for them to lose faith in the team. Once word of this kind of stuff travels around to the local business community, it's very tough to win them back. And I'm talking a year or two of paying up front for everything before winning back some trust...

ALLS I can say is coach Brown better look in the mirror before making to many comments on players. I spent a few dollars at the last two home games and from what I saw he may have been an NFL player, he still thinks he is old school.. it's a 50 Yd field coach. When you have the athletes you have on the Phantoms and you only cored 6 pts in the second half, and then you decide to quit. what a shame.... Your track record speaks for it self. Yes you are a great man and have alot of respect yes, But take the bump and lumps like a pro.....The game against the heroes was a joke..............stop blaming everybody else for your mistakes
