Kicker heads back to Riverhawks
By MIKE MASTOVICH

Johnstown Riverhawks kicker Jason Cherry made a positive impression with the Arena Football League’s Arizona Rattlers, but it wasn’t enough to earn the AIFA player a roster spot.
On Wednesday, Cherry was told he had performed well, but kicker Peter Christosilakos earned the job vacated after Rattlers coach Gene Nudo had cut Arizona kicker Gary Kral on Tuesday.
Cherry, 26, and Christosilakos were invited to try out. Both kickers attended team meetings, practices and drills Tuesday and Wednesday at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix.
“They ended up going with (Christosilakos),” Cherry said in a telephone interview on Wednesday. “They said he was a little bit stronger on kickoffs. He kicked a little bit higher into the net than I did. But they were pretty pleased. I talked to the coach at the end of practice. He told me to keep in shape and you never know what is going to happen.
“He said, ‘You’re everything we thought you’d be and even more so on some aspects.’ He said if the other guy doesn’t produce on Saturday night, I might be back here next week.”
In fact, Arizona’s Nudo said Cherry has potential to play in the AFL, the indoor game’s highest level.
“He had a good workout. We liked what we saw of him,” Nudo said Wednesday. “We would definitely be willing to take another look at him down the road.”
A third-year Riverhawks player, Cherry will return to Johnstown today and should be in the lineup for the 5-5 team’s home game against 8-2 Tallahassee on Saturday night.
“Without a doubt it was a good experience,” Cherry said of his brief stay in Phoenix. “Sometimes when you get called to work out, you work out for the coaches and that’s it. We were in the special teams meetings. We were in the team meetings. We had a locker. We practiced with the Rattlers.
“When I talked to the players, they were impressed. They said both me and the other guy were better than the guy who they had in there last week.”
