Riverhawks burn Freeze

Welcome back.
Johnstown Riverhawks quarterback Jarrod Highberger made a triumphant return to the lineup, throwing eight touchdown passes to lead the Riverhawks past Erie 63-21 in the American Indoor Football Association.
Highberger hooked up with six different Riverhawks receivers for scores Saturday night at Cambria County War Memorial Arena, as coach Tony Penna’s squad evened its record at 5-5.
“I think our receivers are the best in the league,” Highberger said. “Quenteen (Robinson), obviously is the best receiver. Plus our supporting cast – I have confidence in all the guys, every single one of them. They make it easy.”
Highberger, returning to the huddle for the first time in more than three weeks, went 18-for-27 for 235 yards. A late interception ruined a nearly perfect night for the Blairsville native. The left-hander from Carnegie Mellon University led the Riverhawks, who were 0-2 at the time, to three straight wins after being named the starter at Danville in Week 4.
“He’s phenomenal,” said Penna, who is now 2-1 as the Riverhawks coach. “What an intelligent kid. We’re going to try to do everything we can to bring him back.”
Terrance Hudson hauled in two touchdowns (19 and 7 yards) in the first quarter and added one more in the second (40) from Highberger.
“We were looking to get a fast start and try to take control of the game, and just try and keep it up,” Hudson said.
Robinson and Trent Jones each caught a touchdown.
Jones also had two interceptions on the night - one he returned from the 5 for a score.
Former St. Francis standout Michael Caputo had two touchdown catches, and Randy Ott hauled in another.
Johnstown evened its record at 3-3 overall in the three-year series with Erie (1-10).
The Riverhawks’ first win at Tullio Arena came in Week 5.
Johnstown kicker Jason Cherry went 8-for-9 on point-after kicks, missing his only one when regular holder Robinson was replaced after getting injured, and Cherry added a rouge.
Johnstown held the Freeze offense to 22 yards on the ground and 23 through the air in a dominant first half, where the Riverhawks led by as many as 26 points.
The Riverhawks host the South Division’s Tallahassee Titans on May 5, wrapping up their home schedule.
