Riverhawks hope QB change sparks team

Something will have to give in Illinois on tonight, when winless Johnstown hits the road for the first time in the American Indoor Football Association season at expansion Danville, which is also seeking its first victory.
Something already has for the Riverhawks.
Rookie Jarrod Highberger, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound Blairsville High School product, will step into the starting quarterback role in place of veteran Waylon Davis for the Week 4 tilt.
Riverhawks first-year coach Steven G. Folmar said the move wasn’t based solely on the play of Davis.
“We switched quarterbacks,” Folmar said. “I’m not sitting Waylon because I blame him, I just want to see what Jarrod’s got. He’s left-handed and was a starter at Carnegie Mellon. He did some really good things during camp, he just didn’t have the indoor experience.”
Davis started the first two home games, a 60-46 loss to defending champion Canton on Feb. 2 and a 35-24 setback to Huntington in Week 2.
Highberger saw action late in the fourth quarter of the Heroes loss, scoring on a 9-yard bootleg.
With a bye in Week 3, the Riverhawks (0-2) were left with plenty of time to heal and prepare for the Demolition (0-1).
“The bye week was good for us, because we got some bumps and bruises ironed out, and we got to take a look at some new guys,” Folmar said. “We need to go out to Danville and have a good showing. That’s all there is to it. We can’t afford to go 0-3. We have to get off the snide this week.”
Danville led Erie 14-6 last week before the Freeze got on track for a 49-21 win. The Demolition managed only 176 yards of total offense.
It will be the home opener for Demolition coach B.J. Luke’s squad at David S. Palmer Arena. Danville makes the return trip to Cambria County War Memorial Arena on April 14.
Johnstown won’t play again on its home turf until March 17, when the Riverhawks host expansion Pittsburgh. Johnstown travels to Erie on March 4, then has a bye in Week 6.
