Coaches with a past get the present started

Johnstown coach Steven G. Folmar and Canton coach Bobby Olive share a past.
The two coaches will get reacquainted tonight at 7:05 when Johnstown hosts Canton at Cambria County War Memorial Arena in the American Indoor Football Association opener.
Folmar, in his first season with the Riverhawks, and Olive, who is in his second season with Canton, were part of the Arena Football League's Buffalo Destroyers coaching staff in 2000.
Their paths crossed again when Folmar and Olive sought the same head coaching position in another arena league.
I was actually in Buffalo with Bobby in 2000, Bobby was the offensive specialist to the head coach of the Buffalo Destroyers, said Folmar, who was an assistant coach with the Destroyers at the time. Bobby and I were both runners-up to the Youngstown job in af2. So we have a little bit of history going back and forth.
Folmar, who coached Raleigh to the AIFL Southern Conference title game last season, also knows Canton starting quarterback Kevin Mason. Mason led the Legends (13-4) to the American Indoor Football League championship last year.
Their quarterback, Mason, was also with us in Buffalo in 2000, so I know what he can do, Folmar said. Mason's a very mobile quarterback. He was an option quarterback at Syracuse behind Donovan McNabb.
It will be a battle of players from the state of Ohio against players from mostly western Pennsylvania. Seventeen players on the current Riverhawk 20-man roster have ties either high school or college to western Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, more than half of the Legends 30-man roster played college football in the state of Ohio.
Folmar acknowledges that both teams will be well prepared and when the dust settles he'd get a better gauge on his team.
Going into the first game, we're going off of film from last year, Folmar said. I know I'm quite a bit wiser this year than I was last year, and I'm sure Bobby's the same way. He's a fantastic offensive specialist. Obviously, he's got to be a pretty darn good coach if they're the defending champions. We're going to find out how good we are right out of the gate.
