Coach ready to make his Riverhawks debut

Following a full-contact scrimmage last Friday at White Township Recreation Center, the Johnstown Riverhawks closed preseason camp and settled on a game-week roster Sunday for their American Indoor Football Association opener.
“There’s no time left for rookie stuff. It’s time to get ready for Canton,” first-year Riverhawks coach Steven G. Folmar said.
Johnstown hosts the Legends, the league’s defending champions, at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
More than half of the players on the Riverhawks’ 30-man roster have either played high school or college football in western Pennsylvania.
Folmar, a native of Meadville, Crawford County, and graduate of Lock Haven University, is glad to have some top-notch talent right under his nose.
“To get back to western Pennsylvania football, it’s a different kind of football, down in the trenches,” Folmar said. “After being in California and North Carolina, you’re talking more speed guys. It’s a little bit different kind of football.”
Folmar was director of football operations with the Bakersfield (Calif.) Blitz of the AFL from 2002-04, served as the defensive coordinator for the Central Valley Coyotes (Fresno, Calif.) of af2 in 2005 and was the head coach this past season for the Raleigh (N.C.) Rebels.
“The high school football is not near as strong in Raleigh as it is around here,” he said.
The Rebels reached the league semifinals last season before falling to Rome (Ga.).
The most important camp move made by the Riverhawks was not an exodus but a signing.
Johnstown brought back fan favorite Quenteen Robinson, who returns for his fifth year of indoor professional football and his third with the Riverhawks.
Johnstown also returns third-year kicker Jason Cherry, fullback/linebacker Mike Feeney, quarterback Waylon Davis, linemen Densville Saunders and Sam Barber, and Terrance Hudson and Trent Jones at wide receiver/defensive back.
