’Hawks closing in on season

One more practice and a full-squad scrimmage.
That’s all that stands in front of a select group of 30 indoor-football players trying to survive past this weekend’s cuts.
The Johnstown Riverhawks continue camp today and Friday at White Township Recreation Center in Indiana, preparing for the American Indoor Football Association opener Feb. 2 at home against defending champion Canton.
“Camp’s been going really well,” Riverhawks first-year coach Steven G. Folmar said. “We’ve been healthy, no real injuries.”
The Riverhawks are permitted to keep a 30-man practice roster, but Folmar expect to make some cuts prior to the week leading up to Canton.
“We’ve been able to take a look at a lot of guys.” he said. “We have a lot of talented guys out there.”
Folmar said his playbook is larger than most coaches, so many of the mistakes made during practice have been attributed to mental errors.
“It’s been a good week, but a lot mental mistakes,” said Folmar, who coached Raleigh to the AIFL Southern Conference semifinals last season. “My playbook’s bigger than guys are used to and that they’ve seen in the past. It’s taking a little bit for them to get it mentally. Hopefully by Friday they’ve worked out the kinks.”
The line has been beefed up with the recent addition of OL/DL Shawn Williams, who starred at Slippery Rock University and Folmar said there’s a possibility of more signings.
The Riverhawks are loaded at the wide receiver/defensive back position, but could use another fullback with more size.
“That’s our strong suit, our wide receivers and our defensive backs,” Folmar said. “We could probably use one more fullback/linebacker, a big kid. If we get enough big guys in, we have a couple of guys on the line that are a little lighter that could play that fullback/linebacker position.”
Friday at White Township Recreation Center, the Riverhawks will host Media Day and a final preseason intersquad scrimmage at 7 p.m.
“(Today) we’ll go in just helmets, it will mainly be tweaking some things,” Folmar said. “Friday, we’ll go full-contact.”
