Riverhawks first-year coach Steven G. Folmar is pleased to see so many players with area ties on the camp roster for the coming American Indoor Football Association season.
But what especially satisfies the Lock Haven graduate is the level of talent found in western Pennsylvania.
“We were lucky this year that we were able to get a good group of local guys, talented local guys,” he said. “It helps the franchise, it helps bring fans out. These are the guys that are going to help lead us into the playoffs.”
Folmar, who coached the Raleigh Rebels to the Southern Conference finals last season, has culled players from St. Francis, Penn State, Clarion and IUP.
Up to seven former Red Flash players pepper the 31-man roster, fronted by standout wide receiver Michael Caputo.
Folmar said word spread at the Loretto campus when the Riverhawks were first interested in record-setting quarterback Anthony Doria.
“We had a lot of word of mouth there,” Folmar said of the St. Francis connection. “That’s where we picked up Caputo. (Quarterback Anthony) Doria was interested in coming here but signed in the CFL. There’s some talented guys there. If we can get talented guys that close to us, it’s only going to help us.”
Caputo set Northeast Conference records in receptions (245) and yardage (3,464) while at St. Francis.
The Riverhawks finished 8-4 last season, dropping the final two games on the road after rallying to get back into playoff contention.
Seven players return from that squad. Former IUP standout Trent Jones leads the pack.
Jones is joined by lineman Samuel Barber and Densville Saunders, kicker Jason Cherry, quarterback Waylon Davis, FB/LB Michael Feeney and WR/DB Terrence Hudson.
“We have a good mix of players,” Folmar said. “We’ve got experience, but we’re really not going to know for sure until we get pads on and start hitting each other.”
