Riverhawks strapping them up

INDIANA — It’s a good thing the local professional football team practices and plays inside with the way the weather is outside.
The Johnstown Riverhawks of the American Indoor Football Association kicked off their third season Tuesday, with physicals and player meetings at White Township Recreation Center.
Riverhawks first-year coach Steven G. Folmar expects more than 30 players to be in camp for the two weeks leading up to the season opener against defending-champion Canton.
The AIFA expanded the practice roster to 30 for this season, so Folmar doesn’t believe a lot has to be done to the preseason roster.
“We can have as many as 40 guys, but I’m not about bringing in guys that don’t have a chance,” said Folmar, who coached the Raleigh Rebels to the Southern Conference semifinal last season in the American Indoor Football League. “Camp bodies, that doesn’t do me any good. All the guys we have up here (in camp) have a chance of making it.”
Last season, each franchise was permitted to keep 25 players on its practice roster.
The league won’t allow the Riverhawks to release a camp roster until all contracts are signed and physicals are passed, which is expected before tonight’s session.
“We can’t officially give that out until it’s cleared through the league,” said Folmar, a native of Meadville, Crawford County. “The league is real touchy about putting out any information.”
But, Folmar said he was pleased with how many local guys filled the roster.
“I’m happy with where we’re at, and with the people we have,” he said.
Folmar said the Riverhawks have until 3 p.m. today to submit a camp roster to the league.
Camp runs from today through Jan. 26, with a controlled scrimmage this Saturday and the first player cuts on Monday. The Riverhawks won’t practice Sunday.
“I’m really anxious to get this season started,” said Folmar, who will be assisted by Wayne Waugh and Greg Cartrette.
The Riverhawks host the Legends on Feb. 2, the first game on the 2007 AIFA schedule.
