www.tribune-democrat.com/sports/local_story_263232930.html?keyword=topstoryRobinson named GM; Folmar is new coach BY SAMUEL LEGG The Tribune-Democrat The coming American Indoor Football League season will be a fresh start for the Johnstown Riverhawks. The third-year franchise has been without a head coach and general manager since the only individual to coach in every game in Johnstown professional indoor-football history – Brian Basile – relinquished his duties on June 28. During a press conference Wednesday at Cambria County War Memorial Arena, Riverhawks co-owner James Wallace announced that Steven G. Folmar will take the reins as head coach, and Johnstown native Quenteen Robinson will handle the general manager duties. “We’re really excited about the new year,” Wallace said. “We have a new coach coming on board. We signed a three-year deal with him.

Wow. Quenteen moving into the front office.
Good luck to them ... except, of course, when they play us.

Think about this why is it ok to have a GM/player and not a player/coach? ? The league has not permitted players to be involved in coaching or front office activity since year one. Has the league changed its stance on this? If so have they opened up a pandoras box for team to pay players more than the $250-$300 per game allowed by allowing them positions in the front office with substantially more pay. Finally as a player/gm is their not some conflict of interest their when it comes to bringing in and cutting players. Yes the Pittsburgh Penguins have had Mario as player/owner but lets face it Mario is nothing more than a face with some cash for an ownership group.

Umm, where did you hear that players couldn't be coaches too? Richmond did it in 2005 and Coach R2 was very proud of mentioning that fact everywhere he went. That was his way around the salary cap. We do it in every league... I'm looking at bringing in a player specifically to be a player/coach, I think it's the only way to get some guys to keep playing and at the same time gives them that experience in coaching so it's an easier transition for them when their playing days are over. That being said, I don't think I like the player/GM thing, it's a different animal altogether.

I don't think this will be allowed. I do believe there is a rule about player/coaches.
Here is another release on the coach of the Riverhawks. He tried out for Erie, but didn't want to be an assistant.
Riverhawks Tab Folmar to Lead Them Into the Future 09/28/06 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) Johnstown RiverHawks JOHNSTOWN, PA - The Johnstown Riverhawks of the American Indoor Football League have announced a new head coach to lead them in 2007. Riverhawks owners, Michael Dawson and James Wallace, announced Steven G. Folmar as the 2nd Head Coach in Riverhawks history at a press conference last week. Folmar signed a three- year deal with the Riverhawks and is excited about the future of professional football in Johnstown. "Signing a multi-year deal in Indoor football is almost unheard of but the owners, as well as myself, wanted some stability as well as an opportunity to build a franchise, "
Folmar, a native and resident of Meadville, PA, brings a wealth of arena and indoor experience to Johnstown. In 2006, Folmar was the Head Coach of the now defunct Raleigh Rebels of the AIFL. The Rebels finished 8-6 and advanced to the Southern Division championship game, despite going through three different ownership groups throughout the season. While with the Rebels, Coach Folmar had the conference sack leader Terrance Chapman (13), the conference leader in touchdown receptions Lavel Bailey (32), as well as the Conference Defensive Player of the Year, John Williamson.
Folmar was the defensive coordinator of the Central Valley Coyotes of the arena football league 2 in 2005 under Head Coach Fred Biletnikoff Jr. He has over 7 years experience in indoor football, including the Arena Football League, af2, the AIFL as well as experience coaching college football.
Coach Folmar is currently looking to fill out his staff as well as recruiting for the 2007 season. All interested parties can contact the Johnstown Riverhawks offices at (814) 361 - 3460 or Coach Folmar at steveng@johnstownriverhawks.com.
