Maryland’s Starting QB in 2004, Seeking Pro Debut

BALTIMORE, MD (November 5, 2009) – Former Maryland Terps starting quarterback Joel Statham has signed with the Baltimore Mariners of the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA). Statham, a native of Chatsworth, Georgia is one of four quarterbacks signed by the Mariners this off-season, including last season’s starter E.J. Nemeth.

“Joel has a very strong and accurate arm. I like the way he goes through his progressions and his quick release once he makes a decision. Joel will add depth to what is shaping up to be a very competitive position at quarterback,” commented Mariners Head Coach Chris Simpson.

Statham, a four-year letterwinner at Chatsworth’s Murray County High School, was a SuperPrep All-Region selection following his senior season. He also was named to the Georgia-Florida All-Star Game, which features the top 35 players from each state. A threat through the air and on the ground, as a junior in 2000 he tossed 11 touchdown passes and totaled 882 passing yards, while also amassing 1,074 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. In his senior season he tallied over 1,700 yards (890 passing/820 rushing) and totaled 18 touchdowns (nine passing/nine rushing).

As a redshirt freshman for Maryland in 2003, Statham saw his first action when Terps starter Scott McBrien was forced from the Georgia Tech game. Facing tremendous pressure the 6’2”, 225 quarterback finished with 11 for 23 passing for 145 yards in his debut and played in six games that season. In 2004 he won the starting nod for the Terps and played in ten games. He completed 126 of 234 passes for 1,590 yards and notched eight touchdowns. In three seasons at Maryland he totaled 19 games played, 1.947 yards and ten touchdowns.

Statham will be competing against Mariners 2009 starter E.J. Nemeth, 2009 back-up Matt Folke, and former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mike Potts for the starting position in 2010.

I guess crap rises to the top, Statham was awful at Maryland. He kicked off the current down fall Maryland football has been on.

Now he could be a good indoor quarterback but jeez he sucked in college.
